John STALKER

   John joined Manchester as a Cadet before becoming a regular Officer.  After serving in the CID at Moss Side he rose quickly through the ranks, being involved in the Moors Murders inquiry in the late 1960's.  During the 1970's he moved into Special Branch at the time when the IRA was conducting a bombing campaign on the mainland.  In 1978 he moved to Warwickshire on promotion to Detective Chief Superintendent.  At the time he was the youngest person to hold that rank.  In 1980 he returned to GMP as ACC before being promoted to Deputy Chief Constable in 1984.  He retired in 1987 and enjoyed a successful second career as a writer, broadcaster and journalist.
